Re: [cobalt-users] smtp not working properly.

Two issues; mentioned (perhaps) by others, but maybe not clearly enough...

1) Don't rely on Outlook Express "Requires Authentication" to do it by POP before SMTP unless you know it does it that way; my guess (I do NOT use Outlook Express) is that it doesn't. Instead actually do a POP to get your mail. I'm not 100% positive, but I believe if you just press "send and receive" twice, it'll fail to send email the first time but succeed the second time if in fact you've got POP before SMTP set up on your server and issue 2 (below) isn't an issue for you.

2) Many ISPs are now blocking outgoing traffic on port 25. More are adding it literally every day. Many ISPs THINK (emphasis mine) that this helps eliminate spam, which it doesn't. I see this issue every day, because we're American distributors for a Windows-based mail server often used by small customers over dialup connections <www.mailtraqna.com>. If the customer's ISP is blocking traffic on port 25 he has five choices:
  1. Convince the ISP to unblock it for him
  2. Use the ISPs mail server
      a. problem: doesn't always work; some ISPs don't
let you send out mail from their server unless
your return address is set to their domain; a
few even change your return address to whatever
         you've logged in as <frown>).
  3. Find another ISP, who will allow outgoing mail on
      Port 25.
      a. problem: this is getting harder every day as
more and more ISPs are blocking such traffic
  4. Get a direct connection without port blocking
      a. problem: this costs more than many people
         are willing to pay.
  5. Use your ISPs mail server, give up on using
your own domain in your "From:" header, but
use it in your "Reply-To:" header.

I hope this helps <smile>.
