I just decided to try again to figure out what went wrong with my xtr.
I still haven't figured out the cause of my memory/swap problems with
going from a RaQ XTR to a 550. I would like advice on what to do to
get my XTR back in operation. The first thing I'd like to do is make
sure that all the rom reading utilities report the correct disk and
memory configuration. The machine crashes where it should have swapped
memory. I haven't tested with the lastest kernel. As it is not in
production, but rather sitting on my desk (and a noisy sucker it is) I
can turn it off, remove memory or disks etc. with no inconvenience. It
has 2G RAM. It also seems to have problems with the console - I have
had terminals attached, though not lately, and only was able to
read, not enter data or log in. So perhaps there was some hardware
problem.
I decided to examin and concentrate on determining if the memory is a
1. ROM problem ( From some notes on some of Tim Hockin's pages I feel
I should either be at 2.8.x or 2.10.x - not sure which.) I downloaded
some of the romutils to read and right the roms but I don't know where
such things as the amount of RAM is stored or detected.
[josh josh]$ sudo /usr/sbin/cmos -c romrev
2.9.34
2. Memory Chip Problem
I added two chips from crucial which should have brought my machine
to 2G (from 1G). The two gig show up fine in top - the memory test
is below.
3. 550 Kernel in an XTR problem
I am convinced that there are problems with the 550 OS on an XTR,
but I'm not sure they are in the kernel. I haven't tried any
experimental or custom kernels. While I have built kernels for
machines previously, I alway did it by mindlessly following the
instructions of others.
I had downloaded the memtest package and let it run last night.
[josh josh]$ sudo /usr/local/sbin/memtest 2G -l
memtest v. 2.93.1
