I was wrong!!!
The issue I had involved the RAM I was using. You have to be careful with
the RAM you choose. As I wrote earlier, the only issue with using more
than 512MB is the cache misses, which will slow the system down slightly,
but preferred to using 'swap'.

The ALI NorthBridge chip is particular about the RAM it sees. There are
low-density and high-density 512MB RAM DIMMs. The high-density RAMs do not
work at all, or if they do appear to work, they probably are not working
correctly for the whole span of addresses.
