Which IM implementation are you looking at?
There's no reason for the IM server to need Swing. The server should
just run. Any interface for the server should be done via a servlet (if
Java), or other server-side service (if native).
Before you can install anything that uses Java, you will need to install
Java on your RaQ:

Here's a word of warning, however... this is a developer add-on, and is
not intended for end-user "vanilla boxes". The installation is done via
a package, and it *does* require manual configuration to get working
properly (at least on my RaQ and Qube3).
If you really want an IM server, I'd suggest checking into Jabber
(www.jabber.org). It is a very popular open source project with support
for nearly all other IM's including AIM, Yahoo, etc.
Remember, if you like your vanilla box, you should probably find
something else (another server) to play with, and possibly even deploy
to.
