RE: [cobalt-developers] Qube 2700WG or Qube2 as Wireless Accesspoint

:)

I looked into this (a little bit). The trick is that the access point has
some special bridging software to convert between 802.11b and ethernet. That
would have to be added to the Qube kernel.

Most of my information came from a Slashdot link about the Mad Science
Research Labs who pulled apart an Apple Airport base station
 http://www.msrl.com/airport-gold/ ).

The bridging software for that product was Karlbridge ( www.karlnet.com ).
Linux wireless stuff can be found here
http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Jean_Tourrilhes/Linux/
and here
http://www.fasta.fh-dortmund.de/users/andy/wvlan/
with many more links from those.

I'm as mad as you. I imagined walking into a client's small business and
without running any cables etc just pugging in a Qube, adding some WaveLan
cards to existing machines and that's it.

A powerful solution for businesses that are reluctant to invest in
infrastructure that can't be picked up and moved if necessary which is a
common problem for small businesses who often rent office space and can grow
very quickly (needing to add a few extra staff can mean a move or an office
refit).

I came to the conclusion then that I couldn't afford the time to try it
because I'd have to learn too much. I figured it was still a relatively good
idea even if I had to add a base station into the mix. Maybe things have
moved forward?

If not, the Airport one seems like a cheap option and it looks (relatively)
groovy. Some of the links above refer to a Linux version of the config tools
for the Airport so that may reduce/remove the need to have a Mac about to
configure the thing.

Let's hear it for hayband and fencing wire :)
