Most likely you would have to recompile the kernel to use
a PCI slot NIC

The H1012 is actually a small transformer.
I doubt that they are both bad.
The IC is an Intel ball-grid array chip.

You might try a hard disk with a fresh install to see if that works.

The actual NICs are ball-grid-array chips, and a soldering iron will
not handle the exchange.
