The spamassassin files were huge and filled the root partiton, as well as
some tar files from a perl install.
The problem was compounded by the fact that /etc/passwd could not write to
disk from a GUI change (file system full) and had become corrupted.
So I reinstated the passwd file after moving /usr to /home and the
spamassassin files from /root/.spamassassin to /home/.spamassassin
Seems to have fixed it
Just posting, in case someone else gets the problem.
