Is a hackable qube? or pretty secure?

I asked this in Nov/ December, the replies I got are in the list archive.

In summary, the Qube 2 seems more hackable than alternatives, it was recommended to put it behind a NAT for sure, and run security utils that would let me know if someone was messing around with it. The updates from Sun for these are not super current. I do know a couple people who use them for web/ftp/mail and they haven't had problems to date, and certainly no one is posting here frequently saying "I'm hacked".

My conclusion, which may or may not be right for you, is that although it seems possible to make them secure if you really want to do it, to do so would take a bit of involvement on your part, and even then might not be ideal. Not to mention the hardware limitations in the Cobalt kernel. There are a couple of people on this list who provide professional custom support for Cobalt stuff who might have some help, too, but it might be paid professional help. There was at one time a pretty comprehensive archive (apparently) of prepared items for the Qube 2, but it's offline now.

It may be a do-it-yourself for you, but it was more than I wanted to mess with, I put a different OS on my Qube 2 that has more current and ready-to-compile-or-run software readily available.

I think most people put it behind a Linksys or similar home NAT box, and limit the ports that are forwarded to it, and are pretty much fine. I especially wanted a big HD and to run some items that would be hard/impossible for me to get going on the Cobalt OS.
