great suggestions, comments and ideas everyone!!! my .02 would be that
one of the most useful and fast ways of leveraging Sun's contribution
of Cobalt source would be to something along the following lines.
a) create a debian package, complete with dependencies and everything
that would fit over a default install to create a Raq on mixed hardware
a1) create a debian based distro using the above apt-get package, with
the Knoppix distribution as the base. it is probably the most hardware
autoconfig friendly distro.
b) later, make an rpm to fit over a fedora distro
c) create a custom fedora distro with Raq guts.
as noted by netcraft, debian is the third most served platform after
red hat and cobalt linux. we should build on that mindshare.

because of debian's freedom and apt-get, it has to be closely
considered. it is fairly similar to red hat and i will donate research
space on (one of) my debian boxes to anyone interested in this path.
red hat and fedora are nice, but red hat has killed the product line
and fedora is just not the same thing. debian is proving to be an
excellent base.
all in all, i think its hard to argue with the potential utility of
having a cobalt server UI on call for any machine through a debian
repository.
