Curtis,
I've just looked and it seems named.conf is sure enough owned by root:
# ls -al /etc/named.*
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1886 Dec 30 14:39 /etc/named.conf
I don't know how that happened but I've changed it to:
# chown named:named named.conf
# ls -al /etc/named.*
-rw-r--r-- 1 named named 1886 Dec 30 14:39 /etc/named.conf
Could you please tell me what should the /etc/named directory owner:group be
and also the records it contains in that direcorty?
Thanks,
SW

I have the same problem once in awhile when I've made changes to DNS. What
I've found is that the onwer and group on the zone files and the named.conf
changes from "named" to "root". Changing it back always solves it.
