It will give mailscanner a lot less to look at; a lot of email will be 
rejected during smtp connection, before the email even ends up on your 
server, based on where it's coming from.

As an alternative you can set up MailScanner to use blocklists; many of 
us do that by adding blocklist rules to SpamAssassin and letting 
MailScanner call SpamAssassin.

The tradeoff is simple; you may get a few more false positives (and a 
bit of bounced email) if you use Dan's (actually I believe he got the 
code from me) method, but you'll use a lot more machine cycles, and 
download a lot of useless spam, if you use the latter method.
