there is a document in the developers area that is about disaster recovery
and your options...  Myself I would reccomend you mirror a couple drives....
Personally I like to install a second drive that has a fresh restore and
then mount /dev/hda4 and then use that space to put backups of  "the things
we might want"...  I should mention here also that if your doing your
"program additions" by building things from source with a make make install
your missing the great value of the rpm and the way it can allow you to
restore your desired software faster then you can think "where is that link"

So I really suggest mirrored content/support files and rpm
