As root try running meta-verify -uv and see what results you get.
On my RAQ I have passwd- and shadow- files too so you could also try a
diff /etc/passwd /etc/passwd-
and
diff /etc/shadow /etc/shadow-
to see if the original file has been butchered but the backup version (as
far as I understand it) is okay.
Obviously if replacing do backup first. Any offline backups?
You could also try going into the GUI for a bad account and just resave it
and see if that helps. Perhaps change the password...
