Hi Peter,
At the time we had the problem there was plenty of bandwidth available to
the server, the issue was slightly upstream of us.
We had the server in a colo here in Birmingham (UK) running into the BT
Acocks Green exchange, the issue turned out to be more with the
inter-exchange bandwidth - as more and more people came onto ADSL broadband
connections we just got slower and slower as there simply wasn't the overall
bandwidth to cope. The ISP then relocated all the colo servers plus their
own network to Telehouse in London and the problem just went away instantly.
The difference it made to us was simply incredible, probably in the region
of >40x faster.
But we were having the same problems as you describe, email timeouts, telnet
very slow, ftp drop out etc. I went down the DNS route thinking it was that
myself!

Regards,

Phil
