Thanks but there is plenty of bandwith available.

I suspect it might be a DNS issue, in that the clinet cant find the
server, yet at other times the mail flows just fine....frustrating!

When we had that it was due to a lack of available bandwidth, when it
was corrected the problem vanished. It was getting dreadfully slow and
giving the same sort of timeouts.
