Guess #3:  Problems with speed/duplex autonegation?  I've seen
some very bizarre troubles due to that.  What switch are you
using?

Guess #4:  Any sort of firewall monkey business?  Funny things
happen when overzealous IWFs^H^H^H^Hfirewall admins block things
that they should not.
