Samuel,

Thanks and apologies for this because I KNOW I've seen it/found it before,
but where is the user's mbox file stored?

Thanks !

Chuck

Check the user's mbox file for any corruption...expecially in the first
couple lines. Sometimes mbox corruption can cause certain pop clients to
display the symptoms you were describing.

I did that for our problem and the user is STILL getting that error. And the
file is recreated.

Any other ideas what could be causing this ?

Thanks !

We have found that this happens when the user interrupts the mail download.
I just delete the .user.pop file in /var/spool/mail/ but beware that you
will often get a corrupted mail drop doing this and then the user looses all
the mail they haven't yet downloaded.

Dave,

I am having the SAME problem with a user and I went so far as to delete the
account in Microsoft Outlook (because that is of course where I first
expected the problem to be <BG>) and then recreated it. Then I did the same
thing on our Qube 3 and they still got the error. So I created a "temp"
account to test that it definitely was not Microsoft and that works fine.
That was almost a week ago and I had spaced it until I saw this so that
"certain amount of time" must be a doozie :-)

Is it safe to just delete this file ?

Thanks,

Chuck

Try using ls -a That will show you all the hidden files in the folder. I've
noticed this happens if a person is in the middle of downloading their email
and then cancels the download. The server creates this lock file and wont
let them back in a for a few minutes. I believe the file does get deleted
after a certain amount of time. Hope this helps.

How often is the user checking his email?

Not sure, but that is a possibility as this is one of two folks on our
Graphic Arts department that are working our catalog and emailing files back
and forth...

Subject: [cobalt-users] OT: NFS/SMB through a Firewall - Security
Recommendations

Folks,
I have got two linux severs, one on the inside of our firewall, the other on
the DMZ. The one on the DMZ is the Cobalt web server, the one on the inside
is used as a backup server amongst other things.

I am getting sort of tired of using ftp every time I need to upload a web
page, and was wondering if I have any easier options which are secure.

I have tried setting up a mirror on the internal server with a program that
automatically uploads the changes whenever they are made on the inside. The
inside server then has samba so I can easily get to it from my Win
Workstation. Problem is, I was not able to find a good syncronization
program that uses the ftp protocol. I wrote my own, but it was just too
buggy and clumpsy :(

Now, I am wondering if there would be a good way to setup a fileshare
between the two linux servers. Can that me made secure?? In other words, if
I should have a security breach on the outside server, how would I be able
to block them from coming into my internal server through the file share.
Would it be fairly safe if the outside server was the fileshare server,
while the inside would mount the system, being the client. What fileshare
protocol would be recommended? SMB or NFS?

If anyone has any thought on this, or know of a good efficient way to upload
their updated web pages, I would really appreciate it. To me, it just gets
tiring to have to manually upload every change, instead of just having a
directory or folder to drop the new changes into.

Correct. I crammed in 200Gb drives just to see what happens. The Qube, &
RAQ correctly identify them in dmesg, but partitioning and formatting
becomes a mess.

I would say that rsync would do the job, I'm not sure if it supports
scp/sftp, anyway you can get more info here:
