Hi Yah,
Been a while since I posted here :)
Got an email from my provider yesterday that they are tidying up on IP
blocks and that they have now reassigned a block of new IP numbers to our
server (sigh) and we have to change over within a given time frame. I've
been searching most of the day to see what the best way to go about adding
these and changing over customers sites/DNS records without having any
downtime.
Spoke with my provider and they suggest that I do the following:-
RAQ3 with ns & ns2 name servers on the same server ?(was already set-up
like this when I got the machine)
1. Change IP address of one of the main DNS servers IP's to the new IP
2. Ensure there is a virtual site created or changed so the IP binds via
the GUI
3. Then with one of the DNS servers using a new IP and a old IP begin to
make changes to customers DNS Records and site configs
4. When sites procreate and start using new IP's then change the remaining
Name servers IP to the new IP allocated.
All seems straight forward enough but has anyone else got a better way or a
fool-proof way so that there is no downtime?
The way I see it going is to do the following:-
1. Update one of the servers domain name "host records" i.e
ns2.servername.com at the registrars first of all with the new IP
2. Once procreated then change over the IP address of the DNS server via
the RAQ3's GUI
3. Change any virtual sites DNS/IP if using same IP, if not create a dummy
site using the IP so the IP binds
4. Then with one of the DNS servers using a new IP and a old IP begin to
make changes to customers DNS Records and site configs
5. When sites procreate and start using new IP's then change the remaining
"host record" at the registrars.
6. Change the remaining Name servers IP to the new IP allocated via the GUI
after the changes at the registrar has taken place.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong please as I don't want any customers having
downtime if possible.
Many thanks in advance
Chae
