Thanks for your response, Vidar. It seems that when I finished restoring
the data I didn't run the setup wizard which subsequently would have given
the box it's 'name' and placed a 'full' admin password (the lack of a
hostname in the front panel display should have tipped me off). This makes
sense since all the digging I did at the command line showed all OS-level
permissions to be correct. I assumed some password wasn't being passed to
SOMEwhere but this fixed it.
