I had the same issue for months. I couldn't get the hard drive to
format or even be recognized.
The first things to check are:
- Check the cables, maybe exchange them between the units.
- Red-line towards the power connector on the drive
- Red-line on the right, looking from the front on the mother board.
- Does the drive spin up?
If all this is correct, then look at your dmesg log, and you'll
likely see that the drive was not recognized. It, if it's like mine,
will have nothing to do with the drive.
My ROM version was very old, and I updated it (search the archives
for instructions).
To see your rom version, as root type:
/usr/sbin/cmos -c romrev
I had rom version 2.3.35.
Once I upgraded to v.2.3.38 all worked fine, the drives sync'd, and
the gui gave me a yellow light, and a message that said the drive was
syncing.
Gerald Waugh gave me this advice on ROMs:
"When upgrading the ROM be careful!
2.3.35 was not used much, there were 2.3.34 in most RaQ4's
CAUTION!
If your RaQ4 does not have the USB chip, you have to use V2.3.39.
I have repaired several RaQ4s that did not have the USB chip and
people tried to upgrade the ROM.
The USB chip sits just to the left of the CPU, it's a Quad (pins on all 4
sides) about 1" long and 1/2" wide. There will be an empty footprint there if
it isn't used.
A source at Cobalt told me they never sold any that way, they were demos used
by developers, but eventually found there way on to ebay!"
