Hi Andrew,
I have had this problem once too. What you can do is setup a cronjob to
restart sendmail once in a while. Say every hour, this way you are sure that
sendmail keeps running or is down minimal time.
I have never really solved it. But when i had to restore the box i installed
it myself and never had the error anymore.
