Exactly. The 550 OSRCD does have a ROM upgrade feature built in. Some
people have had less than perfect luck with it, though -- the concept was
never able to be fully QA'd by Cobalt prior to release. So there are some
oddball unknown combinations that prevent some ROM upgrades from
proceeding as they should, rendering the server useless (until you get
Gerald to install a new one).
I personally installed the 550 OS on an up-to-date Qube 3 and a RaQ 4r with
no problems using only the OSRCD. Some people like to do the manual ROM
upgrade first to ensure it's in place, then do the OS Restore.
I believe the OSRCD puts ROM 2.9.34 on the system. XTR uses a different
ROM model than the RaQ 4 and Qube 3 do. See http://cobalt.iceblink.org
for much more info, processes, etc than I have listed at CobaltFAQs.
Duncan is "the man" for all things ROM and kernel!
