Fantastic and many thanks. Problem resolved with minimal hair loss!
The specific step that solved the issue was adding the domain name
(designwall.co.uk) as an email alias on the OTHER website using the same IP.
I hadn't thought about doing this.
It appears that for email to work, where you have multiple sites on a single
IP, you must add all the email aliases into the first site you added for
that IP. I don't know if anyone else has come across this problem, or
whether it is becase our RaQs are on private internal IP addresses which are
mapped through a NAT/Firewall.
I do plan to replace all our CNAMEs with A records, but one step at a time!
