Gets me:
Usage: makemap [-C cffile] [-N] [-c cachesize] [-d] [-e] [-f] [-l] [-o] [-r]
[-s] [-u] [-v] type mapname

Have you tried Bruce's "makemap -u" suggestion?
makemap -u virtusertable.orig > tmp.whatever
See if that gives your original file. If not, it's time to try the
"strings" command...
