I don't think that's your problem. You must be overlooking something in the
a and mx records.
Create an a record for domain1.com and www.domain1.com and an mx record for
domain1.com.
Then create another a record for domain2.com and www.domain2.com and an mx
record for domain2.com.

Go back to your user setup and make sure the username for domain1.com is
Paul the username for domain2.com is pails or Paula or Paul. Then create an
alias for pauls on domain2.com. It should work flawlessly.
