I have been having an intermittent problem for a while now. For no
apparent reason qpopper shuts down, then for no apparent reason it
starts up again. I have poured over the logs looking for some pattern
and the only thing I can find is that it seems to always be right about
10 minutes from the time it shuts down to the time it starts back up.
With that limited information I have done some digging and the best
answer I can find is that inetd will call it a runaway process if there
are more than 40 qpopper requests in a minute and will shut down for 10
minutes. There was a suggestion to use -R in the inetd.conf. The post I
found said the default was 1000 and this guy had a lot of FTP use so he
bumped his to 3000.
While there is a -R following the qpopper line in inetd.conf, I can't
fond any documentation to tell me exactly what this is or how it is
used. The post said it sets the "rate" and you use it as -R [rate].
If anyone else has had this problem and was able to fix it, has info on
using -R in the inetd.conf, or has any other ideas they would be greatly
appreciated.
