OS Restore may be the easiest thing to do to get your Qube3 operational, BUT
you will lose all your data and config. The trick is to get a good backup
first.

YES

I have had a similar experience except my Qube3 wouldn't even boot. :-(

What sort of Qube3 is it? If its a Pro Ed, then things can be a little
tedious. If its one of the other models (which only have one HD) its a
little easier.

In either case, you'll need a spare HD and possibly an extra IDE cable.

I'd also suggest you get a copy of Dantz Retrospect for Windows
(Multi-Server) for future use.

Here is the basic strategy ...

1. Install a new disk in the Qube3 and perform and OS Restore onto the new
disk ... use a non Pro Ed OSRCD so that it will not do the RAID thing.

2. Configure the new disk and install all the updates.

3. Install your old disk in the Slot B and connect it to the second IDE
interface.

4. Boot the Qube3 from Disk A, then manually mount the partitions of Disk
B.

5. Login with SSH and copy your data from Disk B to Disk A. (Optionally
install the Retrospect Linux client and use Retrospect as well)

6. Shutdown, remove Disk B, and restart.

If your Qube3 is a Pro ED it will want to set both disks as a RAID array so
things get a little "harder". Essentially after Step 6 you need to get your
data onto another system so you can use a Qube3 Pro ED OSRCD to get your
system back online before restoring your data.

In any case I recommend getting a spare HD. Only copy data from your
existing disk ... DO NOT ERASE IT or ATTEMPT TO REPAIR IT ... you may need
to go back to it if you find you've missed something.

I recommend using Dantz Retrospect for Windows as a means of easily making a
backup of your Qube3 now and in the future. Given your current situation
the Linux Client may not work on your "damaged" system, but at Step 5 above
you could perform a full backup of the partitions of Disk B.

Remember, the only backup you'll ever really need is the one you don't have.

Cheers, Malcolm
