I had the same problem. Here is what I found:
First, Look here.. http://www.solarspeed.net/news/749.php
I uninstalled the Cobalt patches in reverse order until I had 15959
uninstalled. Then uninstalled my PHP 4.1.2-3.
Then reinstalled all Cobalt patches... then reinstalled PHP 4.1.2-3. At
this point all is working and has been for 2 weeks now.
