As others have said, 115.2kbps + 8N1 is your friend.
I don't use Win9x Hyperterminal; I prefer Minicom on *ix box.
I recall HT being cranky... and, if memory serves, I want to say
it had to do with mismatched flow control settings. I believe
you want flow control _off_.
