They aren't ESSENTIAL... but it does mean that if someone on an IP abuses the heck out of the engines, all sites on the IP are at risk of banning - as the IP is usually blocked.

We host mainly ecommerce sites, and sites with serious intentions to marketing themselves - most of our sites get their own IP - not all, but most.

Clients pay for at two levels - "business" level gets their IP - "affordable" doesn't.
