Hi Todd,
You shouldn't need to use --with-mysql at all. PHP should compile in
MySQL support automatically. See
http://www.php.net/manual/en/ref.mysql.php for more information ("With
PHP 4 MySQL support is always enabled; if you don't specify the
configure option, the bundled libraries are used.")
If you're using a RaQ4, there is a PHP 4.1.2 package at
http://pkgmaster.com that does all the dirty work for you. :)

I am in the process of upgrading php on my raq4 and had one question.
instead of using --with mysql=shared I am using --with mysql=/path. My
question is where do I point it too. I used the pkg from pkgmaster. I
see
/home/mysql but that looks like the databases. Any help would be
appreciated.
