Presuming your client really does own "domain.com", the DNS for that
domain is hosted by Domain Bank at dns1.domainbank.net and at
dns2.domainbank.net. You or your client should arrange with Domain Bank
to point to your nameservers. or you should remove all DNS records for
domain.com from your server and you or your client should arrange with
Domain Bank to include the correct records in the domain.com zonefile.
If your client really doesn't own www.domain.com, and you're just
munging his real domain name to that to hide his identity, then you
should use "example.com"; the "example" domains are reserved for just
that purpose.
If the latter is the case, then you haven't given us enough information
to help you with the DNS. If the former is the case, then the current
host is probably hosting his DNS: you can tell by doing a "whois" on his
real domain name. If the client's current host is hosting his DNS, then
after your website is completed you should either have the current host
reconfigure DNS as required to point to your system for resolving the
website, or your client should move the DNS authority to you (using his
registrar) and then you can host DNS for both the websites and the
email.

You should either be hosting all of DNS or none of it. While you can
have authority for only one zone, this would NOT solve your problem.

Without seeing your DNS I can't ascertain why with 100% certainty, but
I'd suggest your DNS is telling your server it's authoritative for
email, whereas it's not.

Have you deleted the domain name from the various databases sendmail
keeps? You can see them at the control panel URL for sendmail.

When you set up the site, you shouldn't use any aliases email (exactly
how depends on your RaQ).
You should either host all of DNS or none of it. Either way, DNS should
be exactly as it would be for any other site with these exceptions:
1) www.example.com and example.com should both resolve to the IP# you
host it on.
2) all other example.com records should point to his current host
provider's addresses.
3) there should be no MX addresses for the domain pointing to your
system.
