Re: [cobalt-users] [RaQ4] Using dd to make backups

No, it doesn't locl the files,
I shut down all processes (http, ftp, qpopper, smtp, mysql, asp) when I do the
dd, including pulling the plug on the Internet.

Gerald

ah. ok. Thanks!

That has been a concern I have - I do a dd of 4 partitions every Sunday morning - I know I am taking my chances by I can't drive 12 miles to the server every Sunday to do this.

Other than email not being up to date ... since I am the only person that can do anything admin'ish on the server, and knowing my hostees are all sleeping so they are not ftp'ing to their site at the time, do I have any OS related items that my destination dd'd drive could have corruption in, or am I *basically* safe using this method to backup?

Also - does anyone have the rsync command off hand so I can update my dd'd drives periodically? And maybe how to add it to cron for middle of the night sync'ing?

Thanks,
Jale
