Oh! I bet you used partition magic.
Try changing fstab to use hda6 instead of hda5, then swapon -a
You might take a look at /etc/mtab also to see what is mounted.

Funny, I just went through the whole procedure again with my backup here on
all the same equipment - yes, Partition Magic - and it all worked fine.
