What does /etc/fstab say?
try swapon -a if fstab has a swap entry.

ok I did this:

[root /root]# mkswap /dev/hda5
Setting up swapspace version 1, size = 41119744 bytes

[root /root]# swapon -a

[root /root]# cat /proc/meminfo

Looking at the file size here, I am beginning to wonder if I just turned my little tiny cobalt boot partition into a swap file!?

I think I will drive in tomorrow and have a look.
