this problem is unrelated to the chkrootkit install.
'service' is usually associated with tcptools from dan bernstein
(maker of qmail, etc) - it's an inetd replacement that monitors and
restarts daemons as needed.
I don't know why it's there, or how you installed ipchains. Can you
just remove that crontab entry?
