Enough extra lookups to find the nameserver (I nominate the
number "2" as a good candidate), and waiting for the extra
return.

It might be a judgement call.  You know how pedantic I am... we
have .org domains still using .net/.com nameservers, which
resolve just fine, but it can be made better with minimal effort.
