[cobalt-users] Mojo Mail & GPL Question

I'm investigating the installation and usage of a GPL'd mailing list
application (Mojo Mail) on my converted RaQ 3i. ("Converted" meaning it's
running the RaQ 4 OS.)
The author indicates that the copyright information and link back to his
site cannot be removed from any of the application-generated screens -
unless we contribute $50 to support future application development.
I'm a big proponent of giving credit where credit is due and I've
even contributed cash to further the development of OSS apps, but if it's
a GPL'd app, can he really demand that?
I don't think so, but I'm not an expert on the GPL.
Anyone?
Does anyone have experience - good or bad - installing and using Mojo on
their RaQ 3 or newer machine?
TIA
-jf.
