Look a little further down in the ouput.
[root mailman-2.0.9]# ./configure --help | grep -i python
--with-python specify path to Python interpreter
Then tell Mailman the location of the Python binary by supplying the
following, where <path_to_new_python> is the location of the new Python
binary you installed.
--with-python=<path_to_new_python>
