We just started running webmail for our users on one dedicated
box which only has one IP address. We simply setup a tightly locked down
user account which only provides POP and IMAP access for each user. The
users then login to webmail via the only site hosted on the server, on
which we give them secure (SSL) @TheirDomain.name webmail service via a
Squirrelmail installation. Plugins are available for Squirrelmail which
make it possible for users to quickly and easily setup vacation messages
and email forwarding and all kinds of nifty functionality. Migration is
easy enough - we simply setup up the user, configuring Squirrelmail to
retrieve their email from their existing POP account, then we change the
mx records after the user starts using it. We've only had our dedicated
webmail server running for a few days now however we've been using the
very same webmail setup, running on shared servers, including Cobalt
RAQ3s, for a good year or so now without as much as a hitch.
The biggest benefit, in my opinion, is taking email off the web
servers lowers their load considerably while adding a much welcome layer
of redundancy. The additional security is comforting also. There's only
one account on our new email server that accepts shell/FTP logins and
we're only running the services absolutely necessary to support the
webmail, POP and IMAP via an SSL secured connection - it's a lean mean
email machine :-)

Brent
