RE: [cobalt-users] Alternative Server Appliance Q&A

I guess in many ways your right regarding the appliance aspect.. but then
again to that same end I've got pretty firm opinions regarding NAS
Appliances.. that being that they should have non-volatile O/S's so that
should the power go out no harm no foul.

Regarding the comparison between the XOasis vs. Sun-Cobalt unit's yes I
would agree the Sun-Cobalt units are more appliance oriented but would not
agree that they are a appliance in the truest sense as a toaster is.. if
they were there wouldn't really be much need for this forum.. something to
think about I guess..??

Definitely appliance is a over used and generally mis-used term most of the
time. And I am as guilty as any in that area.

I am curious were you saw mention of the XOasis server only being certified
for Windows. It's not a Windows server but based on a BSD. Nothing I've
seen hints of anything but neutral compatibility between client OS's.

This unit is not an appliance and thus not an alternative server appliance.
They also only show the unit being certified for windows. I guess some
people, like paul, will like this.

You could buy any slim rack mount for about the same price. You then load
what ever you want. I used to use systems from Crystal Systems and they
were pretty good. But I had proprietary power supplies. $200+ for a power
supply is ridiculous.

Does anyone really have an alternative server appliance?

Server appliances are for those people who want to maintain many machines
with a lower amount of maintaninence and for those who are not literate
enough to build a system from scratch. (me when it comes to Linux) I even
went to a LUG and tried to get some help loading a server. They said load
everything and then they would show me how to shut things down. I down
want everything loaded on a server. Only what I need. That is what an
appliance already has. May not be what you want, but it is what most
appliance users need.
