There is a BIOS flash utility available in the same place as the 2.4 kernel.
I presume you would need to kill off almost every task or reboot into single
user mode to get it to work reliably though.

Also, I believe the main reason for a new ROM image is to support the ext3
filesystem, since it appears the cobalt ROM attempts to check if the linux
kernel is at least present before allowing a boot from disk.
