I took a look at this - looks pretty cool, for a number of different types
of applications.

IIRC, though, laptop hard drives are considerably slower than desktop
counterparts. Not sure how that will/won't affect your situation.

Looking at the specs for the fujitsu 20gig notebook drive I bought last night: http://www.fujitsu.ca/products/storage/mobile/h15l.html#performance_spec

  Rotational speed 4,200 rpm
  Average latency 7.14 ms
Average seek time 12 ms (typ.)
  Interface transfer rate 100 MB/sec. (UltraDMA 100)
  Internal transfer rate 18.4 to 32.5 MB/sec.

and the specs for my cobalt seagate 15gig drive:

http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/specs/ata/st315323a.html

INTERNAL TRANSFER RATE (Mbits/sec) _______up to 308
EXTERNAL TRANSFER RATE (Mbytes/sec) ______up to 66.6
  AVERAGE LATENCY (mSEC) ___________________5.56
  INTERFACE ________________________________Ultra ATA/66
  SPINDLE SPEED (RPM) ______________________5400
  AVERAGE ACCESS (ms seek/read/write) ______8.9/10.5/11.5
SINGLE TRACK SEEK (ms seek/read/write) ___/1.5/2.1
MAX FULL SEEK (ms seek/read/write) _______/23.0/25.0

I'd say that the performance is probably about the same on average given the ata 100 over the ata 66.
