It should be looked into, sure. Sounds like they manually set the root
password to be different from admin -- a good security move, as long
as you know what the new password is! :)

A reinstall is definitely the safe thing to do, especially as you
don't know what else might be on there, and you haven't filled up the
server with content yet.
Just make sure you install all the updates before putting the server
online...
