If you were running a large mailing, /var was filling up because
that's where the mail logs are stored (/var/log/maillog). Logrotate
should take care of the problem when it runs at 4am and compresses
the files (you can remove all the maillog.x.gz files to save space
also, if you don't need access to the logged info -- for that matter,
you can delete _any_ of the /var/log/blah.x.gz files to save space if
you don't need the info anymore).
While I agree /var could be a bit larger, resizing the partition is
sort of a drastic measure for the problem you were describing...
