Good point, although it actually doesn't matter from an
operational perspective. Confusing, to be sure.
A client encountered this exact situation earlier this week or
toward the end of last. After renumbering nameservers, domains
registered with NSI still showed the old IP address. Go figure.
However, the glue records had been updated in the GTLDs, and the
NSes were renumbered correctly.
One can check the glue records. For example, if checking
everquick.net:
dig +norec @a.root-servers.net everquick.net. ns
will refer you to the correct GTLD servers. Repeat the process
using one of those NSes:
dig +norec @a.gtld-servers.net everquick.net. ns
Continue following the DNS trail until you see your nameserver
and an IP listed in "ADDITIONAL SECTION":
ns1.everquick.net. 172800 IN A 216.89.137.11
Note the IPs; these show the contents of the glue records.
Whatever you see there is what is used -- regardless of what
"whois" says. In this case, 216.89.137.11 is the IP address
for "ns1.everquick.net".
Moral of the story: "whois" records often do not reflect
reality. :-)

Eddy
