Re: [cobalt-users] [RAQ4] IP address not working as expected... what to check?

Greg,

ok - I've got ask - what wrong with me setting the netmask to 255.255.255.0 ??

Anything else is just a pain in config tables right?

Before making any changes to your Cobalt server network configuration you need to speak with your Service Provider and clarify the exact details of you IP allocation.

In your original email you indicated that your Provider had allocated you a block of 16 IP addresses (/28 in CIDR notation):

Details for 65.101.207.160/28
Number of usable addresses is 14
Netmask is 255.255.255.240
First IP address usable is 65.101.207.161
Last IP address usable is 65.101.207.174
Broadcast IP address is 65.101.207.175

Several list members have pointed out that your server is configured with multiple IP addresses using the subnet mask for a block of 8 IP addresses (/29 in CIDR notation):

Details for 65.101.207.160/29
Number of usable addresses is 6
Netmask is 255.255.255.248
First IP address usable is 65.101.207.161
Last IP address usable is 65.101.207.166
Broadcast IP address is 65.101.207.167

In a subsequent email you have also indicated that your required at least 48 usable IP addresses, which would require an allocation of a block of 64 IP addresses (/26 in CIDR notation).

Ask your Service Provider for the correct details that they have assigned for your server. If they have assigned the correct number then amend your server network details from the web UI. If the assigned range is lower than your requirement then explain this to your Provider who may need to assign you a new block.

To answer your question directly: changing the netmask(s) to 255.255.255.0 (/24 in CIDR notation) would in theory allow you the use of 254 usable addresses but in the worst case scenario you may lose remote connectivity to the server plus you will undoubtedly annoy the Service Provider. This action may also result in your server stealing IP address use from other customer servers and once again annoying your Provider. The result is going to largely depend on how your Provider configures their network devices.

In summary: don't make any changes until you can speak with a technical member of staff at your Provider.

For information on IP address allocations take a look at the Iana web site (http://www.iana.org/ipaddress/ip-addresses.htm). Your IP addresses are part of the Arin range (http://www.arin.net/).
