I think at the end of the day, I ended up with two separate Perl

when I try to use SpamAssassin, it ends up using the stock perl, which can't
find the pods. I'm hopelessly confused at this point.

SpamAssassin itself doesn't require Perl 5.8; it may be easier to install the required pods in your stock directory and let it use the installed Perl. I've got a step-by-step for this (details of working through Kim Schulz's posted outline on my Qube3) at <http://bluebird.sinauer.com/~morse/cobalt/procmail.html>. Notice that you'
ll need more than just the four posted pods:

* File-Spec-0.82
Mail-SpamAssassin-2.43
* HTML-Parser-3.26
PodParser-1.18
* HTML-Tagset-3.03
Time-HiRes-01.20
podlators-1.24

Perhaps that will help?
