Regardless of the system used, it should be placed behind a simple
password. It's mind-numbingly stupid for these archives (or archives of _any_
mailing list, but this one in particular since we should _all_ know better as
sysadmins) to be openly accessable by any email-snarfing robot out there. The
argument that people are too stupid to input a simple password is paled by
the massive amounts of spam that WILL be sent to list addresses because of
the open archives.
On the lists I control, there are NO web-based archives; all archives are
accessed via email, subscribe accounts only. Is it _possible_ for them to be
harvested? Yes. Is it likely that spammers will take that kind of time when
there are so many _open_ archives out there like the one attached to this
list to snarf addresses from? Nope.
