I made a how-to on here a couple of days ago, you should have followed
that.  I have gotten numerous emails that it worked great.

What I suggest.

1) use the php.ini from 4.2.3  DO NOT use a previous version. (maybe?), 

2) copy over from the modules from ./modules/ to /usr/lib/apache/php.  You
probably just need the new mysql.so that PHP makes.
